PUNJAB

Punjab is a state in northwest region of India. The name Punjab is made up of two words i.e Punj(Five)+Aab(Water) which means land of five rivers.These five rivers of Punjab are Sutlej, Beas, Ravi,Chenab and Jhelum. The Punjab state is divided into three regions that are Malwa, Majha and Daoba.

Historical Facts about Punjab:

• The state Punjab came into existence after the Independence . The present Punjab was created on 31 Oct 1966 after separation of Himachal Pradesh and Haryana.
• The Sikh faith came into excistence in the 15th and 16th Century. Guru Nanak Dev ji first guru of Sikhs founded this religion then followed by 9 Gurus.
• Guru Ram das ji laid the foundation of the city Amritsar.
• Guru Arjan Dev ji compiled the Adi Granth. The son of the Guru Arjan Devi ji , Guru Har Gobind ji trained his followers in Military art.
• The Sikh Empire was formed by the Maharaja Ranjit Singh  during (1801-1849)

• Punjab shares its international border with pakistan in west. The international border with pakistan is 425 km.
• Punjab borders with 4 states: Jammu and Kashmir in North, Himachal Pradesh in northeast, Haryana in south and Rajasthan in Southwest.
• Ludhiana district is largest in terms of both area and population.
• Most Literate district is Hoshiarpur and the least literate is Mansa 

Social and Cultural Facts about Punjab:

• The Holiest  place Harminder Sahib (Golden Temple) is in the city of Amritsar. The city was founded by the fourth Sikh Guru Ram Das ji and this temple was designed by the fifth guru Arjan dev ji. The Present temple was rebuilt by Jassa Singh Ahluwalia in 1764. Gold cover installed above Gurudwara by Maharja Ranjit Singh Later on.
• Of the Five Takht three are in Punjab —Akal Takht (Amritsar); Takht Keshgarh Sahib (Anandpur Sahib); Takht Damdama Sahib (Talwandi Sabo) — and the other two are Takht Patna Sahib (Bihar) and Takht Hazur Sahib (Nanded, Maharashtra).
• Amritsar is one of the major tourist destination of Punjab
• Bhangra and Gidha are the traditional dance forms of the Punjab.

• Sunil Mittal: He is the famous businessman and CEO of Bharti Telecom. He was born in Ludhiana District of Punjab.
• Amrita Sher Gill: She is the famous painter who was born in Budhapest (hungary) to punjabi Sikh father.She is also Known as expensive painter of the India
• Har Govind Khurana : He was the scientist who recieved Nobel Prize in year 1968 . He later became citizen of US. He was born in Raipur of Punjab 
• Dharmendra: He is the famous hindi film actor who was born in Ludhiana district of Punjab 
• Numerous other bollywood actors are born in Punjab . They are Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Rajesh Khanna, Pankaj Kapoor, Yash chopra.
